How communication functions in democratic processes

The Ocala Chapter of the Florida Public Relations Association will hold its monthly professional development meeting in-person at the College of Central Florida, 3001 SW College Road, Ocala, on Thursday, July 15, noon-1 p.m., with networking starting at 11:30 a.m.

The featured speaker is Myiah Hutchens, Ph.D., associate professor in the Department of Public Relations at the University of Florida, who will present: “How communication functions in democratic processes.”

Hutchens is a political communications scholar whose research focuses on what leads people to seek out diverse perspectives – particularly views they disagree with – and how individuals then process that disagreement.

Hutchens’ work can be found in several high-impact journals and has been cited more than 1,500 times. She currently serves on the editorial board for the Journal of Communication, Communication Research and Communication Methods and Measures.

Prior to joining the University of Florida, she was a faculty member at Washington State University, University of Arizona and Texas Tech University.

Hutchins has her bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Washington State University and her doctorate from Ohio State University.

The cost to attend the in-person meeting at the College of Central Florida is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers and includes a boxed lunch. The cost to attend the virtual meeting is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers. The reservation deadline is Monday, June 12.
