April 2018 Luncheon

FPRA members and guest are walked through the why and how stories connect us with others so they can hear our ideas.

Jessica explains the ARBINGER Pyramid of Influence and how the tool can be used to discern where to focus your attention and efforts to affect sustainable change.

Ginger Broslat, APR, CPRC, presenting on “Fall Therapy: learning to walk with ethical integrity when you are destined to fall along the way.”

Ginger teaches the audience how to go down gracefully and rise triumphantly in her training on ethical behavior in a corporate setting.

The FPRA Code of Ethics principals were highlighted and a copy was provided to guests and members in a business card format to easily reference.

Carolyn Maue, Executive Coach and Consultant, presenting on “Leading your team to success: know your strengths, understand the challenges, and embrace solutions.”

The February Professional Development Luncheon gave members and guests the opportunity to think about their own strengths and how those strengths can be applied to a team they are on. Carolyn also discussed the different “ingredients” that make up a successful team.

Kevin Christian, APR, CPRC’s “Act, Think, Look & Deliver: Be a PR PRo” presentation was a hit! Kevin shared his insight into what makes a PR practitioner both professional and effective.
Kevin gave simple tips and tricks to keep PR professionals on point with the media and also talked about what adds and detracts from the on-screen message.

We were thrilled to have Officer Ben Tobias tell his story about his organization’s video going viral. Officer Tobias shared great tips about what to do once a post “hits the millionaire’s club.” What a great opportunity to learn about the Gainesville Police Department’s journey through social media stardom.Thank you Officer Tobias for taking the time to share these insights with us!

September’s FPRA meeting taught us some very useful Twitter tips. Suzanne Grant, APR, presented ways to connect with the community. We were also able to see how our members felt about using Twitter through a real-time poll. Thank you Suzanne for taking the time to visit with us and answer our questions!

It was a full house at the July FPRA Ocala meeting. Devon Chestnut, APR, CPRC shared her favorite technology tools used in internal communications with Cox Communications. Members were also excited to welcome Devon as a new member to our chapter since she relocated to Ocala!

July was another meeting with a large number of guests and potential members!

Being an intern carries all sorts of responsibilities. Remember what that was like? At The Villages Media, that means getting out and meeting people. Jessica Greene Fuchs sent the company’s intern Alex Laufersky to our last meeting to meet and greet – and she did! She went back with a pocketful of business cards to prove it. Thanks for making Alex feel so welcome and showing her why FPRA should be a part of her professional future.

December 2015 Holiday Social

About 20 local PR practitioners – members and prospects – gathered on December 17 from 5-7 p.m. at Infinite Ale Works in downtown Ocala for a holiday social. During the two-hour gathering, guests mingled while indulging on finger foods donated by Publix at Grand Oaks Town Center. During the second half of the event, table moderators Ginger Broslat, Kevin Christian, APR, CPRC, Lila Ivey and Lisa Varner, APR, CPRC, led lively discussions about existing PR challenges for those in attendance. At the evening’s end, guests left with minds and bellies full, while feeling pride that 52 items were collected at the event for Interfaith Emergency Services’ food pantry.

November 2015 Luncheon

Speaker Melanie Fridl Ross, MSG, ELS, shared some trade secrets in her talk, A Tale of Two Cities: Re-branding Shands and UF. Melanie is Chief Communications Officer, UF Health; Senior Vice President/CCO, UF Health Shands; and Associate Vice President for Health Affairs, UF. Focus groups overwhelmingly supported the name change from Shands to UFHealth and creative advertising using real doctors and patients further drove the message home: UFHealth is tops!

There’s no better reflection on the quality of a speaker than one we received via survey after Roy Reid, APR, CPRC spoke: “I returned to the office excited about how to use the information.” After all, that’s what FPRA is about – To help us do our jobs better!

Ocala FPRA members celebrated Bosses Day in October and several were in attendance. It was also interesting to see how many members had supervised or currently supervise other members.

The ladies’ boss from Jenkins Auto may left before picture time, but at FPRA Ocala, we always find a way to make things work!

Marion County Sheriff Office’s former public information officer, Capt. James Pogue, and the current public information officer, recently-promoted Lt. Ryan Robbins, shared how the MCSO online newsroom was created and gave tips to attendees for how to implement a similar program. They even demonstrated you don’t need all the latest technology – like a teleprompter – to get started.

Ocala FPRA Chapter President Jen Lowe wanted her 2014-2015 Board to “Get the Point” that she appreciated their service.

Roger Pynn, APR, CPRC designated 2014-15 incoming chapter presidents as part of the FRRATeam. Barbra Hernandez was excited to don her cap for his arrival in Ocala.

Chapter President Jen Lowe presented the PACEsetter Award to Ginger Broslat. The PACEsetter Award was started in 2005 to recognize the member who had gone above and beyond their member duties to strengthen the chapter.

Ever wondered about the origin of the City of Ocala’s colorful logo? We got the back story and learned about the creative process from guest speaker Jess Church, a Senior Designer with MERJE in Pennsylvania. Her company has created “way-finding” for numerous cities across the nation. Way-finding includes paths, signage and branding that get you from point A to point B in a cohesive and enjoyable way.

April 2015 Luncheon

Rae Seaman shared the case study of the Yes For MarionSchools campaign, which led to the passage last November of an education funding referendum that garnered 54% of the vote.

Barbra Henernandez, APR was the winner of the chance drawing fora seat at the Painting With a Twist benefit event for Transitions Life Center. Donations for the drawing were split between TLC and the FPRA Education Foundation.

Moon J. Lee, Ph.D,(L)  associate professor in the Department of Public Relations at the University of Florida was the Feb. speaker for professional development. She spoke on the importance of research in developing strategic PR programs. She was reunited with chapter member Staci Bondini, a former student at Washington University.

Ginger Broslat and Fred Mullen first met at an FPRA Ocala luncheon almost 15 years ago. Fred mention his organization, Hospice of Marion County, was creating a new position. Ginger applied and the two became a great team for communicating the Hospice mission for four years. Fred is in town from Tennessee directing a show at Ocala Civic Theatre.

It was a Hospice reunion table as Lila Ivey and Lisa Varner followed in Fred and Ginger’s positions at the organization. Lisa has since left Hospice to work with Jenkins Auto Group. FPRA keeps colleagues connected!

October 2014 Meeting Highlights

FPRA Ocala members celebrated Bosses Day in October by inviting their bosses to the luncheon. Lois Brauckmuller, APR had a special treat as her boss, College of Central Florida President Dr. Jim Henningsen, was also the guest speaker. Dr. Henningsen shared his personal experiences to inspire members to “Bring Passion to Your Profession.” He also shared how rewarding it is to be involved with CF to play a role in allowing their students to pursue their passions

September 2014 Meeting Highlights

Jeannine Robbins invited Ocala Fire Rescue PIO Ashley Lopez as her guest to learn more about FPRA.

The new chapter year for FPRA Ocala began in a new meeting location. Meetings are now held on the campus of the College of Central Florida at the Ewers Century Center. Members gained insight on crisis management preparation and enjoyed a delicious lunch.


The new meeting space is located in the Strategic Planning Center on the 1st floor of the Ewers Century Center. It’s conveniently located, modern and provides for great networking.That’s Jen Lowe at the podium conducting the first meeting of her term as president.

CF caters our luncheons now as well.The menu included a chicken cutlet with sides of green beans and rice pilaf, a mixed green salad and FPRA’s signature chocolate cake!

We’ve traded in the yellow hard hat for a red fire chief’s hat to help us ignite the fire! Barbra Hernandez collects FLAME Buck (fka “Pace Bucks”) to support the FPRE Foundation.

Marc Rice is an Emmy Award-winning video journalist and founder of Digital Fury.

“Take Two: Communicating Your Organization’s Message Through Video”

Marc Rice spoke to a full house at the July meeting. He shared the value of making a stronger connection with your audience through video. Marc offered tips for organizations with limited budgets on how to do simple, yet impactful videos on your own. He also shared tips on how to prepare and efficiently work with vendors if you can afford to outsource production.
